Christoph Spengel

Christoph Spengel (born February 9, 1964 in Heidelberg ) is a German financial economist .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1983 at the Helmholtz-Gymnasium in Heidelberg, Spengel did basic military service and began studying business administration at the University of Mannheim in 1984 , which he completed in 1990 with a degree in business administration. His diploma thesis was awarded the Prechel Foundation Prize.

He then worked as a research assistant , initially at Otto H. Jacobs ' chair , and from 1991 at the Center for European Economic Research . In 1995 Spengel was awarded a Dr. rer. pole. PhD . His dissertation was honored by the SCHITAG Foundation and the specialist tax consultant institute .

In 1996 Spengel was appointed university assistant, and in 2002 he completed his habilitation. He then worked for Ernst & Young for half a year ; at the same time, he represented the professorship for international business taxation at the University of Hamburg . In 2003 he accepted a professorship for taxation at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen . In 2006 he returned to the University of Mannheim, where he has held the chair for business taxation ever since.

His main research interests are (inter) national corporate taxation, tax planning, tax competition and harmonization in the European Union as well as tax innovation promotion. In 2016 Spengel took eleventh place in the FAZ ranking of Germany's 100 most influential economists in the politics category.
