Christopher Thompson (astronomer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A. Christopher "Chris" Thompson (* 1961 ) is a Canadian astronomer and astrophysicist.

Thompson is Professor at the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (CITA) at the University of Toronto .

He deals with high energy astrophysics and neutron stars. In 1992 he and Robert C. Duncan developed the Magnetar model (pulsars with extremely high magnetic fields) of the Soft Gamma Repeater (SGR).

In 2003 he and Duncan and Chryssa Kouveliotou received the Bruno Rossi Prize for their work on magnetars. In 2018 he was elected to the Royal Society of Canada .
