The Evangelical Lutheran Christ Church is in Hollen , a part of the community of Uplengen in East Frisia. The neo-Gothic follow-up building for a pre-Reformation church was built in 1896.

history

A first church was built in Hollen in pre-Reformation times, probably in the first half of the 13th century. It was in the old cemetery east of the pastor's shop. According to the current state of knowledge, it was a typical East Frisian hall church , which was built from bricks in the medieval monastery format in the Romanesque style. It is still unclear whether it originally had an apse . This church has been renovated several times.

In the 19th century, however, it became more and more dilapidated and its size no longer met the demands of the growing population of the place, so that the community decided to demolish the old church and build a new one at another location. In 1894 the construction of today's church began under the direction of the church builder Conrad Wilhelm Hase (1818–1902). The tower was built seven meters shorter than planned. Probably cost reasons influenced this decision. The construction cost a total of 54,860 marks. Two years after construction began, the church was inaugurated on October 11, 1896.

During the First World War , the church bells had to be handed in to be melted down. A few years after the war ended, the church was damaged by fire in the 1920s. The woodwork inside was painted gray for cost reasons after the subsequent renovation. On Epiphany Day 1925, two new bells were inaugurated, one of which was also melted down during World War II . As a replacement, the community procured the second bell that is still in existence today.

description

In keeping with the zeitgeist of that time, the Christ Church was built in the neo-Gothic style. This is particularly evident in the nave with two bays, the transept with two gables and the choir with buttresses and tracery windows . Neo-Gothic forms can also be found on the west tower with its very narrow, high windows. The top of the nave is finished with a wooden ceiling with carvings and paintings. There is a ribbed vault above the choir. The interior walls are plastered white, the window reveals, arches and door frames show red brick patterns.

Führer organ

The renaissance pulpit was taken over from the previous building. It was created in 1655 by the carpenter, carver and painter Tönnies Mahler from Leer. The four evangelists with their symbols can be seen on the pulpit. The stairs and the pulpit support were renewed in the 19th century.

The baptismal font and the figure of Christ date from 1903.

The altar is a work from 1990. Its appearance is based on its neo-Gothic predecessor from 1896, from which the crucifix was adopted.

The single-manual organ with pedal and twelve registers was built in 1989 by the organ building company Alfred Führer from Wilhelmshaven, who, at the request of the church building authority , based the design of the prospectus on neo-Gothic prospectus designs by CW Hase, just like the builder of the first organ Johann Martin Schmid .
