The Christ Church in the Bad Brückenau state spa is an Evangelical Lutheran church owned by the Free State of Bavaria . It is unique in Lower Franconia because of its architecture and its design with Art Nouveau elements .

history

The construction of the church was suggested by the Russian Grand Duchess Marija Alexandrovna Romanowa , who often went to the state spa for cures. In 1908 the church, built of light quarry stone from the nearby Fondsberg, was consecrated . Its architecture and furnishings are based on the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. The design came from the Munich architect and royal building advisor Eugen Drollinger .

Architecture and design

The domed house of God is supported by four pillars that lead into the symbols of the evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Art Nouveau elements can be found in particular as ornaments on the pulpit , on the colored glazing in the apse and with regard to the painting of the galleries, including the round arches. The altar , which is based on the Byzantine style , and the pulpit are made of Solnhofen stones . Opposite the chancel on the east side there is a large colored glass, designed by the Munich painter Kohlenberg. It depicts the ascending, resurrecting, or returning Christ.

The plastered outside of the Christ Church, with its many round windows, is characterized by a life-size Christ relief by the sculptor Sebastian Putz . Bible verses can be found everywhere from the entrance to the exit portal. The wrought iron door handles on the outer doors are shaped like a devil's face or a bat's head. Probably the artist wanted to express that before entering the church, evil must be overcome.
