Christ Church

The Christ Church is the Protestant church in the village of Erxleben in Saxony-Anhalt .

Architecture and history

The church was built in 1716 on the site of an older previous building. From this older church, a corner bracket with the inscription 1584 has been preserved on the northwest side . The designs for the church probably came from the environment of the Brunswick master builder Hermann Korb . Originally the church was named St. Godehard .

The church was built on a cross-shaped ground plan and was built from rubble stones. The nave has a three-sided eastern termination. On the west side is the church tower with a rectangular floor plan. The church tower is half as wide as the nave. On its south side there is a staircase to the gallery .

The interior of the church is spanned by a flat ceiling. The cross arms are separated from the nave by two wooden, rectangular pillars. The pillars have a rich profile and Ionic capitals .

The furnishings come from the first half of the 18th century and were made of pine wood. Both the pulpit and the low altar wall were donated by Maria Theresia Scalless according to an inscription in 1733 . The pulpit is octagonal and rests on a rectangular support. Above the pulpit is the sound cover with a free-floating dove symbolizing the Holy Spirit. An oval painting depicting Salvator Mundi is applied to the rear wall of the pulpit. After being signed, it was created in 1736 by CA Osten . On the altar sheet there is a representation of Golgotha signed by E. Osten . There is a wooden crucifix in front of the altarpiece . The church stalls date from around 1720.

The font dates back to the 17th century. The baptismal font, which is elliptically shaped in the form of a chalice, stands in that of the room and is decorated with acanthus and egg sticks.

On the west side is the manorial box . It is beautifully designed and structured with pilasters . It has segmented arched windows . The organ gallery is located above the box .

In 1903 the interior decoration was renewed. A repair took place in 1999/2000.

Rectory

The rectory is also a listed building . It was built in half-timbered and quarry stone construction in the second half of the 17th century. Changes took place in the 19th century. A richly designed half-timbered gable with diamond crosses , St. Andrew's crosses and decorative infills made of brick in the 19th century is remarkable.
