Chronicles of Crime is an app-supported and cooperative detective board game by game designer David Cicurel for one to four people, in which the players have to solve a criminal case in each scenario. The game was released in English and French in 2018 following a kickstarter campaign on Lucky Duck Games. In the German-speaking region, it is distributed by Corax Games , which launched the game through the Spieleschmiede after a successful campaign.

Theme and equipment

The game is about the players to solve criminal cases. They have to solve a case in each scenario by combining information and results from surveys. When the players have enough clues, they can try to solve the case by answering several questions.

In addition to the instructions, the game material consists of:

  • a game board for displaying the clues,
  • 17 place-name signs,
  • 4 forensic contacts (criminologist, scientist, hacker and doctor)
  • 52 information and special cards,
  • 55 character cards

There is also a mobile app that can be used on a smartphone or tablet (minimum Android 4.4 or iOS 8.0 ) and can not be played without the Chronicles of Crime . In addition, 3D glasses can be used to view crime scenes in virtual reality in the app on the smartphone .

Style of play

Preparations

To prepare for the game, the players place the game board in the middle of the table and place the locations, characters and special items next to it. All clues are openly laid out and forensic contacts are shared among the players. The Scotland Yard location marked with the house symbol is placed under the game board.

After building the game, players launch the app and select a scenario (or tutorial ) that they want to play.

Style of play

In Chronicles of Crime , the app specifies the main moves and special features of the respective scenario with which the other players as investigators deal. They are given a location of the action, to which they travel and which they can view using the app. They also scan characters, pieces of evidence and other locations they encounter during the game. They can interview characters who can provide clues about other characters and pieces of evidence. When you scan evidence, you will learn more details about it. They can also question their forensic contacts about people and objects.

All locations, characters and items are only required if they are expressly requested in the app. New locations, characters, clues and objects are placed on the respective storage spaces on the game board or on the location cards. In some places, the app allows you to search for clues. In this case, the players can see the location in the app either in a 360 ° panoramic view or with the help of the 3D glasses. Each player has 40 seconds to describe the scene to his fellow players so that they can search for the relevant clues. After the search, the other players scan the clues and the app indicates whether there are any clues relevant to the case. Players also receive additional information when they have clues investigated through their forensic contacts.

During the game, the time required is billed based on the activities of the players. For each scanned object, each suspect, and each investigated crime scene, 5 minutes are estimated, and each change of location costs 20 minutes.

Playing

If the players assume that they can solve the case, they go back to their starting point and can report there to their supervisor. He asks you a series of questions that you have to answer based on your material. After the survey, the players are given a rating that depends on the answers and the time required. You can then request an explanation that gives the correct result for the scenario.
