Chronicon Salernitanum

The Chronicon Salernitanum is a chronicle of the Lombard principalities of Salerno and Benevento in southern Italy, which was probably written around 978 by a monk from the monastery of St. Benedict in Salerno .

The chronicle deals with the history of the southern Italian Lombard principalities in the 9th century relatively comprehensively, while the descriptions for the subsequent period are more succinct. The reliability is rated higher in the more recent research than in the older, the author seems to have relied on some good sources.

The work also contains the legend of a patriarch of Byzantium, which could have served as a model for the legend of Popess Joan . The basis of the editions by Pertz and Westerbergh is the Codex Vaticanus latinus 5001 , a manuscript from around 1300.
