Chrysi ( Greek Χρυσή ( f. Sg. ), The golden one, also Chrisi or Chrissis ) is an uninhabited Greek island in the Libyan Sea . The less nice-sounding name of the small island, Γαϊδαρονίσι ( Gaidaronísi 'Donkey Island') is more common among the locals, and the island is noted as such on some maps. The island is about 5 km long and 1 km wide and is located about 15 km south of the Cretan city of Ierapetra . During the season, Chrysi can be reached from there by excursion boats several times a day after a one-hour crossing. Individual excursions to Chrysi can also be booked from Myrtos .
The flat island consists almost entirely of white limestone sand and thus differs from the typical rocky islands of the Aegean Sea . Today the island has no more water of its own.
There are no sights, but very nice beaches. There are no overnight accommodations, but there are two taverns available for day-trippers and bathing tourists during the summer season . Camping on the island is officially prohibited. Many of the visitors practice nudism , especially on the eastern section of the north coast.
natural reserve
Since the island in an area of about 0.35 square kilometers with a forest of Phoenician juniper ( Juniperus phoenicea ) and Großfrüchtigem juniper ( Juniperus macrocarpa ) is covered, it was after the FFH-directive as SCI ( Community area importance ) GR4320003 Chrysi (Νήσος Χρυσή) included in the Natura 2000 network of the European Union . The trees have an average age of 200 years and a height of up to 7 m, isolated trees are said to be 300 years old, they are then up to 10 m high.
