Churais
Churais , also Khurais , ( Arabic حقل خريص, DMG Ḥaql Ḫuraiṣ ) is an oil field in Saudi Arabia . Pilot drilling began as early as 1963, but the field was not developed for the next 45 years because the neighboring Ghawar , the largest known oil field in the world, provided sufficient oil. The oil field covers 2,890 km² and is halfway between the Saudi capital Riyadh and the Abqaiq oil processing plant . It is operated by the state-owned company Saudi Aramco , was commissioned on June 10, 2009 and was the target of a drone attack on September 14, 2019 . The extent of the actual destruction and the perpetrators of the attack are currently unknown.
Megaproject Khurais
A project to develop these oil fields was announced by SA as a Mega Project . It includes not only churais, but also the neighboring Abu Jifan and Mazalij oil fields. In 2006, they began working with Halliburton , Snamprogetti and Hyundai on the development of the fields, the wells, the supply lines and the natural gas production. The project should increase Saudi Arabia's export capacity from 11.3 to 12.5 million bpd. Both light oil and natural gas are produced for the power plant in Yanbuʿ al-Bahr on the Red Sea. Because the production complex is in a remote area, weekly shuttle flights have been set up for oil field personnel from Dammam to Khurais Airport.
The drilling was completed in February 2009, ten months ahead of schedule. Funding began on June 10, 2009.
Attack on September 14, 2019
On September 14, 2019, the Churais oil field - as well as another Saudi Aramco key facility, Abqaiq's oil processing facility - was targeted by drone attacks . A large fire spread, the clouds of smoke stretching over 150 kilometers away. Business Insider released satellite images of the damaged facilities.
