Churer Zeitung (1800-1856)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Churer Zeitung from 1800 to 1856 was the second newspaper under this name. It was published as a conservative paper in Chur , the capital of the canton of Graubünden , which joined Switzerland in 1803 . Its successor was the newspaper Die Rheinquellen (1856–1860) and its successor was the Neue Bündner Zeitung (1860–1865) .

history

French troops occupy Switzerland

After French troops occupied what was then Switzerland for the first time in March 1799 and introduced civil liberties, the newspapers began to express themselves more politically. The state interventions (censorship) that followed triggered ongoing discussions about the relationship between the press and the state.

Hardly founded, already closed

The «Churer Zeitung», founded in these turbulent times, initially pursued a pro-Austria course and advocated adherence to the old Graubünden constitution. But in July 1800 French troops occupied the country a second time and drove the Austrians out. The «Churer Zeitung» was closed. Three months later she was able to reappear with a different editorial team. From then on she reported cautiously on cantonal political events - at least until the censorship of the Grisons press was gradually relaxed and completely lifted in 1839. Candreia judges the paper with a reproachful tone: «The type of the Churer Zeitung was from the old journalistic school and almost exclusively news service . Your editorial team purposely closed its eyes to the internal conditions in the communities and in the canton. "

Three name changes

From 1806 to 1814 the newspaper appeared as “Der Telegraph aus Graubünden”, from 1814 to 1816 as “Der Telegraph für Graubünden”, and from 1817 again under the old name “Churer Zeitung”. These repeated renaming changes little of their character.

A competitor appears

It is more important that the «Churer Zeitung» remained the only Graubünden newspaper with political reporting for a long time. But in 1830 she became a competitor with the radical-liberal Bündner Zeitung (1830–1858) , which prompted the Churer Zeitung to become more reader-friendly in terms of writing style and appearance. Philosophically, she positioned herself in the conservative camp.

"Abandoned" by the publisher

Bernhard Otto, the publisher of the "Churer Zeitung", left Graubünden in 1856. The newspaper was discontinued at the same time. Her successor was the paper Die Rheinquellen .

Remarks

  1. According to the journalistic definition, it was not a direct successor to the first Churer Zeitung (1782–1789) . See: Foppa (2002), page 8.
