history

Graubünden receives a quality sheet

After the newspaper “Die Rheinquellen” had failed, its publisher launched the “Neue Bündner Zeitung” with a new editorial team. This was more successful with the audience than its predecessor. Their journalistic quality was praised. In retrospect, Candreia describes it with noticeable relish: “The newspaper is one of the best editors of the entire 19th century, treats many public questions in numerous editorials in a beautiful form and always in a noble tone without hateful polemics with other daily newspapers at the same time, is through numerous correspondents in the country well informed about natural events and the recurring phenomena of folk life, also moves with preference in the area of regional studies and patriotic history. "

Use against a centralized state

From an ideological point of view, the “Neue Bündner Zeitung” advocated the self-government of the municipalities, today one would say for subsidiarity . She opposed the then emerging tendency to equip the federal government in Bern and the cantonal administration in Chur with more powers. Even then, this attitude was described as "liberal-conservative". The term “critical of the state” is more precise.

Departure without giving reasons

As early as 1865, the "Neue Bündner Zeitung" ceased its publication. This step was unexpected and surprising. The reasons were not explained in the sheet. Foppa points out that the publisher Hummel had died shortly before, after which the publishing house “Senti & Hummel” was reorganized as “Senti & Casanova”. But to what extent this change of publisher was related to the closure of the newspaper has so far remained unknown.
