Petrades ( Greek Πετράδες [ pɛˈtraðɛs ] ( m. Pl. )) Is a village with 184 inhabitants (2011) in the municipality of Didymoticho , East Macedonia and Thrace region , in northeastern Greece .
location
The local community Petrades ( Topiki Kinotita Petradon Τοπική Κοινότητα Πετράδων) is bounded in the east and southeast by the Greek-Turkish border river Evros . Pythio borders in the north and Prangi in the west .
history
The village was founded at the beginning of the 19th century by stonemasons who settled there because of the stone found in the area (Greek: πέτρα = stone). The stones produced here were used as building blocks until the 1940s. Through the manufacture and sale of the stones, the village achieved a certain prosperity. As a result of the devastation of the Second World War and the Greek Civil War, as well as the decline in the demand for stones from Petrades, there was strong emigration - first to Belgium and later as guest workers in the Federal Republic of Germany . The majority of the former inhabitants of the place and their descendants now live in Germany, especially in the greater Stuttgart area .
Culture
There is an annual village festival on August 15 and 16.
