The Circus Monti is a Swiss circus owned by the Muntwyler family.

history

Guido Muntwyler - founder of the Circus Monti

The beginnings of the Circus Monti go back to the childhood of Guido “Monti” Muntwyler (1932–1999). Even as a child he loved circus and especially clowns. Later he organized courses for children with the clown Pello. It was Pello who advised him to go into circus life with his sons. "Monti" never let go of the idea. In 1984 Guido Muntwyler stopped teaching.

The circus, founded in 1984 as a family company , first appeared on March 12, 1985. After Guido Muntwyler's death, his wife Hildegard (1936–2019) and their three sons Johannes, Niklaus and Andreas Muntwyler continued the circus. In 2005 Johannes Muntwyler took over the management. Niklaus Muntwyler works as an animal trainer with horses, the artist Andreas Muntwyler as an artist and tightrope walker. Johannes Muntwyler's sons are also active in Circus Monti: Tobias is responsible for renting tents, Mario works as a juggler and Nicola attends the circus school.

In order to position itself more broadly, in June 2014, on January 5, 2015, the Circus Monti bought the circus and tent rental Alfredo Nock AG, which had previously been domiciled in Märstetten (TG) . Founded by Freddy Nock's father, it is now one of the largest tent rental companies in Europe. This has more than 30 tents in various sizes, as well as grandstands. The partly long-term supply contracts, including those with the Arosa Humor Festival and Paléo Festival Nyon , were also taken over. The material is stored in the Monti winter quarters in Wohlen.

The big top has space for almost 800 spectators.

program

Over the years the circus has established a style that runs through all productions. Part of the concept of Circus Monti is to embed the individual numbers in a story of a poetic mixture of circus and theater. Almost every year the design of the programs is entrusted to a different director. A recognizable influence in the directorial work can be found in the fact that most of the alternating creative people have spent several years of study at the Scuola Teatro Dimitri ( University for Movement Theater and Theater Creation ).

Animals

By 2004, that had horses by Niklaus Muntwyler an integral part of Monti programs. The Circus Monti did not carry any exotic animals . Instead, domestic animals such as Swiss goats, donkeys, sheep, geese, ducks, chickens and guinea pigs were found in the menagerie . Since the 2011 season no animals have been kept in the Circus Monti.

Winter quarters

In the winter quarters in Wohlen (AG) the new program numbers are worked out, the matching costume series designed and new pieces of music composed. In addition to the circus office, the winter quarters have a training hall, an exercise ring , a workshop, a spray room as well as storage rooms and covered parking spaces for the circus wagons and tractors . The stables are used by Niklaus Muntwyler for his horses. In 2014 the winter quarters were expanded with a large building (storage areas, covered parking spaces, training hall). Monti's Variété has been taking place in the new training hall during the winter months (November / December) since 2015.

Awards
