The Cittaviveka , also Chithurst Buddhist Monastery , is a Buddhist monastery in the English community of Trotton with Chithurst , West Sussex , near the town of Petersfield .

It was founded in 1979 by Ajahn Sumedho , a student of Ajahn Chah . The Chithurst House , which is now called Wat Pa Cittaviveka , was acquired. The monastery follows the Thai Forest tradition , a current of the Theravada . The novices live according to ten rules, the monks according to the 227 rules of Patimokkha . The vow is voluntary, a monk can leave the religious community at any time. In addition, many interested parties and course participants live in the facility for short or long periods.

A separate building is available to the female members ( Siladhara ).

The monastery also has a small piece of forest. The donor met Ajahn Sumedho while jogging and, impressed by the sight of the bhikkhus , started a conversation with him . He then took part in a ten-day retreat and later decided to bequeath the entire 108 acre forest to  the British Sangha .
