Ajahn Sumedho

Ajahn Sumedho (* 1934 in Seattle , Washington ) was abbot of Amaravati Monastery in Hemel Hempstead from 1984 to 2010 . He teaches the Buddhist branch of Theravada in the forest tradition . Ajahn means teacher.

Ajahn Sumedho was born as Robert Jackman in Washington State. During the Korean War (1950-1953) he served for four years as a medic in the US Navy . He graduated from the University of Washington the Bachelor of Chinese Studies , in 1963 the master. He then worked for a year as a social worker for the Red Cross . From 1964 to 1966 he taught the English language in Borneo for the Peace Corps .

In June 1966 he went to the Wat Sri Saket monastery in Thailand as a novice and became a monk in May 1967. He followed the teachings of Ajahn Chah , the master of meditation in Wat Pah Pong monastery . In 1973 he went on a pilgrimage to India . In 1975 he founded the international forest monastery Wat Pah Nanachat in Thailand , which teaches in English. In 1977 he visited England with Ajahn Chah and was commissioned by him to found a monastery there too.

The English Sangha Trust initially made its facility in Hampstead available to Ajahn Sumedho . In 1979 he acquired what is now Cittaviveka in West Sussex . From there, further monasteries were founded in Northumberland , Devon , California , New Zealand , Switzerland ( Dhammapala ) and Italy . In August 1984 the Amaravati Buddhist Center opened in Hertfordshire , where the Ajahn Sumedho, who is known for his humor , now lives. Also noteworthy is the ordination of Siladara (Ten Vows Nuns) authorized by him and the creation of an extraordinary nunnery in Theravada .
