Dorshout (in the local dialect Torsend ) is part of the village of Veghel (municipality of Meierijstad ) in the province of Noord-Brabant in the Netherlands .

geography

The hamlet of Dorshout is located northwest of the center of Veghel on the banks of the river Aa . The oldest industrial area in Veghel is also called Dorshout. This is located at the old port of the Zuid-Willemsvaart canal .

history

Dorshout is one of the oldest districts of Veghel. In older sources it is mentioned as Torhout or Dorhout . The rural structure is characteristic of Dorshout: originally the settlement consisted of large farms, whereby the Cruysbroedershoeve from the 15th century is worth mentioning. The landscape around Dorshout is characterized by the parceled wet meadows on the banks of the Aa. To the west of Dorshout, a lot of soil was reclaimed between the 17th and 19th centuries, so that a structured landscape, surrounded by poplars , was formed.

A chapel dedicated to St. Sebastian was located in today's Sluisstraat in Veghel . It was called the Dorshout Chapel, probably because it was located south in the immediate vicinity of Dorshout. This chapel was demolished around 1800. The place where this chapel was located was still known in 1825.

development

The A2 motorway currently runs right through the Dorshout area, with the De Amert industrial area planned to expand further towards Dorshout. The poplar landscape that surrounds the river has meanwhile disappeared due to the cutting of the trees, and the river itself has been straightened. The agrarian importance of Dorshout has diminished sharply with the disappearance of most of the large farms in the course of the development of agriculture. As a result, Dorshout has lost its original character, although some large agricultural buildings are still preserved, which are currently only used as exclusive living space.

future

As part of the so-called Master Plan A of the Dutch Ministry of Transport, it is planned to give the area along the banks of the Aa greater ecological and recreational importance.
