Ciudad Barrios is a municipality in the department of San Miguel in El Salvador . It is located at an altitude of 860 m and 103 km east of the Salvadoran capital San Salvador . The community has a total area of 68 km² and is divided into 11 cantons with a total of 24,817 inhabitants.
history
The city was founded as an indigenous village called Cacahuatique during the early years of Spanish rule in El Salvador . The title of city but gained Ciudad Barrios until the year 1883. On this occasion, the town changed its name in honor of the born near the town of military and politician Gerardo Barrios of Cacahuatique in Ciudad Barrios . Archbishop and human rights activist Óscar Romero was born in the community.
In the middle of the sixteenth century, Cacahuatique had a population of 600 souls. In 1770 the settlement had 166 inhabitants in 34 families and since July 12, 1824 it has been part of the Department of San Miguel. In 1890 Cacahuatique already had 2,310 residents. Due to the large population growth, the settlement quickly received the title of city.
