Cláudia Sousa

Cláudia Sousa (* 1975 in Portugal ; † September 29, 2014 ibid) was a Portuguese biologist and primatologist . She was regarded as one of the world's leading experts in the field of sound research of chimpanzees and the study of the environmental relationships between chimpanzees and humans.

Live and act

Cláudia Sousa studied biology at the University of Coimbra until 1997 . In 2000 she graduated with a master's degree in biology . 2001 followed a doctorate at the Institute of Primatology of the University of Kyoto under Tetsurō Matsuzawa . At the same time, she has been teaching primatology at the Faculty of Human Sciences at Universidade Nova de Lisboa since 2001 .

Between 2007 and 2011 she was President of the Association of Portuguese Primatologists (Associacão Portuguesa de Primatologia). In 2007 she was also Vice President of the International Primatologist Conferences. She was also a member of the International Primatological Society and author of more than 25 scientific publications.

As early as her doctoral thesis, she dealt with the cognitive abilities of primates and especially of chimpanzees. To do this, she conducted field research in chimpanzee colonies in Guinea-Bissau and Guinea-Conakry . She was also active in environmental protection . Her research included considerations about the interaction between nature and chimpanzees on the one hand and the effects of humans on the other. The volume study of chimpanzees also among the her preferred fields of research.

Sousa died in September 2014 at the age of 39 from complications from cancer.
