Claig Castle is a ruined castle on the island of Am Fraoch Eilean off the island of Jura in the Scottish administrative unit Argyll and Bute . The 12th or 13th century castle was once a fortress of the MacDonald clan .

history

The castle was once a massive fort that was described as a "sea fortress". For more than four centuries, it enabled the Lords of the Isles of Clan MacDonald to control and rule all maritime traffic north and south through the Hebrides .

The castle remained a fortress of the MacDonalds until they were conquered by the Campbell clan in the 17th century .

Historic Scotland has listed the ruins as a Category C Historic Building.
