Clairaut is an impact crater to the south of the lunar front , southwest of Barocius crater and west of Breislek . The crater is heavily eroded and the edge of the crater in the southern entirely overlaid by the addition craters Clairaut A and Clairaut B .

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the French mathematician Alexis-Claude Clairaut .
