Clarence Shaw

Clarence Eugene Shaw (born June 16, 1926 in Detroit , † August 17, 1973 ) was an American jazz trumpeter .

Shaw first played with Lester Young in Detroit before moving to New York City . He worked with Charles Mingus and can be heard on several of his records (including Tijuana Moods , East Coasting ) and Shafi Hadi . After a dispute with Charles Mingus during the recording of A Modern Jazz Symposium of Music and Poetry - Shaw was ill when the title "Nouroog" was recorded and Mingus berated him for his absence - Shaw initially gave up music entirely, tried his hand at ceramics and Silversmith and also studied hypnosis. He then went to Chicago , where he continued to be active on the scene under the name Gene Shaw from 1962 at least until the mid-1960s and recorded albums as a leader.
