Classical Electrodynamics (German: Classical Electrodynamics ) by John David Jackson is a textbook on theoretical physics for the field of classical electrodynamics . It is considered a standard work at universities worldwide .

The book covers all of classical electrodynamics in a broader sense, including relativistic but not quantum electrodynamics (QED). It starts with electrostatics , boundary value problems and magnetostatics , then goes on to the actual electrodynamics with the Maxwell equations and radiation and then to the description using the special theory of relativity . Also magnetohydrodynamics and plasma physics are treated introducing. Quantum corrections are sometimes briefly touched on, but not dealt with in the full formalism of QED.

Original publication

The English-language original is published by John Wiley & Sons in New York . The first edition appeared in 1962 and is based on lectures Jackson held at McGill and Illinois Universities for the previous eleven years . Jackson began work on a revised new edition in 1970 during a sabbatical at Cambridge University ; it was published in 1975. The current, third edition followed in 1998 and has 808 pages.

German publication

The German translation is published by de Gruyter . The first edition is from 1981, revised new editions followed in 1983, 2002 and 2006. The translation is by Kurt Müller, the current edition was also edited by Christopher Witte. It has 938 pages.
