Claude E. Leroy

Claude E. Leroy (born November 24, 1919 in Lake Mills , Wisconsin , † March 4, 2005 in Madison , Wisconsin) was an American Romance scholar , Hispanist and Lusitanist .

life and work

Leroy studied at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (Bachelor in French 1941, Master in Spanish, 1946) and was from 1943 to 1946 (after military service) at the same university instructor for Portuguese (so also 1950-1951). From 1947 to 1948 he taught Spanish at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. From 1948 to 1950 he was director of the American cultural institute in Porto Alegre , from 1954 to 1958 translator and interpreter for a company in Madrid and from 1958 to 1960 language teacher in Venezuela and Brazil. In 1960 he returned to his home university, rose from instructor (1960–1963) to assistant professor (1964–1968) and was associate professor of Portuguese from 1968 until his retirement in 1983.
