Lloyd August Kasten

Lloyd August Kasten (born April 14, 1905 in Watertown , Wisconsin , † December 13, 1999 ) was an American Romanist , Hispanic , Lusitanist and Medievalist of German descent.

life and work

Lloyd August Wilhelm Kasten (whose mother tongue was German) first studied economics and then Spanish (graduated in 1927) at the University of Wisconsin in Madison . Then he went to the University of Florida in Tallahassee and to Madrid to the Centro de Estudios Históricos. He received his doctorate in Madison in 1931 under Antonio García Solalinde with the work (Ed.) Secreto de los secretos, translated by Juan Fernández de Heredia. An edition of the unique Aragonese manuscript with literary introduction and glossary .

After Solalinde's untimely death, he took over the Seminary of Medieval Spanish Studies (later Hispanic Seminary of Medieval Studies) founded by his teacher as an assistant professor and ran it successfully for a lifetime. He became Associate Professor in 1942, Full Professor in 1947 and later Antonio G. Solalinde Distinguished Professor of Spanish and Portuguese. In 1975 he retired, but remained active at the seminary.

Kasten was a co-founder of the '' Luso-Brazilian Review '' . In 1956 he received a Guggenheim scholarship . In 1974 he became a member of the Academia Norteamericana de la Lengua Española (ANLE).
