Lawrence Bayard Kiddle

Lawrence Bayard Kiddle (born August 20, 1907 in Cleveland , Ohio - † March 26, 1991 ) was an American Romanist and Hispanist .

life and work

Kiddle studied at Oberlin College and the University of Wisconsin – Madison . He received his doctorate there in 1935 with the work La estoria de Tebas. The version of the siege and destruction of Thebes contained in the General estoria of Alfonso X. After stints at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque , Princeton University and Tulane University in New Orleans , Kiddle taught at the university from 1947 to 1978 of Michigan , first as an assistant professor , from 1948 as an associate professor (which he was also in New Orleans) and from 1954 as a full professor.

During World War II, Kiddle made it to lieutenant commander in the Navy. From September 1943 he set up language laboratories there, as well as from 1945 to 1947 in the Departamento de Letras e Idiomas of the Peruvian Naval School, which he directed. After his appointment at the University of Michigan in 1947, Kiddle founded the first language laboratory intended for university students there in September 1949 with Ernst Pulgram .

Kiddle was President of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP).
