John Eugene Englekirk

John Eugene Englekirk (born September 24, 1905 in New York , † September 30, 1983 in Los Angeles ) was an American Romanist , Hispanic and Lusitanist .

life and work

Englekirk studied at Bard College (formerly St. Stephen's) and Northwestern University . He received his doctorate in 1934 from Columbia University under Federico de Onís with the work Edgar Allan Poe in Hispanic Literature (New York 1934, 1975). Englekirk taught from 1928 to 1932 and from 1934 to 1939 at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque . From 1939 to 1958 he was professor at Tulane University in New Orleans and then until 1973 professor of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). Englekirk co-founded the Revista Iberoamericana magazine in 1938 , which he published from 1959 to 1961.

Englekirk was President of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese in 1949 and President of the International Institute of Ibero-American Literature / Instituto Internacional de Literatura Iberoamericana (IILI) from 1965 to 1967.
