Mariano Azuela

Mariano Azuela (born January 1, 1873 in Lagos de Moreno , Jalisco , † March 1, 1952 in Mexico City ) was a Mexican doctor and writer.

Life

Azuela studied medicine at the Universidad de Guadalajara ; after successfully completing his degree, he was admitted to practice as a doctor in 1899. Politically interested, he took part in the revolution and fought against Porfirio Díaz under the leadership of Francisco Madero . For some time, Azuela also managed the administration of his homeland Lagos de Moreno.

After Madero's assassination, Azuela resigned from all his offices in 1913 and joined Pancho Villa . In 1915 he fled to El Paso ( Texas ) and worked there a. a. as a journalist. Two years later he returned with his family to the capital of his country and worked there as a doctor for the rest of his life.

reception

Azuela's great broad theme is the Mexican Revolution. In many of his novels, stories and essays he describes the development of his fatherland. His by far most famous novel - Los de abajo - was written in 1915 as a serial for the features section of the El Paso del Norte Spanish-language newspaper published in El Paso . In the following year it was also published in book form. Shortly after its appearance, it was translated many times and a remarkable film adaptation by director Chano Urueta was shown in cinemas from June 1, 1940 under the same title.

With Los de abajo , Azuela dispenses with historical accuracy. Rather, his work captivates with rapid scene changes and vivid images with which he paints an impressive picture of the revolting hordes. This novel is still considered to be the most important of the well over 200 revolutionary novels.

In addition to his big topic, Azuela described the time of his studies in his first novel María Luisa with slightly autobiographical echoes. His works Regina Landa and La mujer domada are typical representatives of Costumbrismo .
