Ralph Steele Boggs

Ralph Steele Boggs (born November 17, 1901 in Terre Haute , Vigo County , Indiana , † July 23, 1994 ) was an American Romance scholar , Hispanist , folklorist , paremiologist and fairy tale researcher .

life and work

Boggs received his PhD from the University of Chicago in 1929 at the suggestion of Archer Taylor with the work Index of Spanish Folktales. Classified according to Antti Aarne 's 'Types of the folktale', translated and enlarged by Stith Thompson (Helsinki 1930, 1993). He taught Hispanic studies from 1929 to 1950 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (where he set up the first course in folklore in the United States in 1939 ), then until his retirement in 1967 at the University of Miami in Florida .

Boggs founded the magazines Folklore Americas. A semi-annual journal devoted to the study of Hispanic and Latin American folklore (from 1941) and North Carolina Folklore (from 1954). From 1937 to 1981 he obtained a bibliography for the magazine Southern folklore quarterly. A publication devoted to the historical and descriptive study of folkore and to the discussion of folk material as a living tradition .

Boggs was married to the Dominican folklorist Edna Garrido de Boggs (1913-2010).
