Antonio García Solalinde

Antonio García Solalinde (born December 28, 1892 in Toro (Spain) , † July 13, 1937 in Madison (Wisconsin) ) was a Spanish Romanist , Hispanic and Medievalist who worked in the United States.

life and work

Solalinde attended school in Valladolid and studied in Madrid at the Centro de Estudios Históricos, as well as in Portugal, Germany and Italy. He obtained his doctorate in 1924 under Ramón Menéndez Pidal with the thesis La primera versión española de el Purgatorio de San Patricio y la difusión de esta leyenda en España . Solalinde has been visiting professor many times, notably in the United States. In 1931 he founded the Seminary of Medieval Spanish Studies (later Hispanic Seminary of Medieval Studies) at the University of Wisconsin in Madison (Wisconsin ). There were Victor Oelschläger and Lloyd August box his most important students. The latter took over the leadership of the seminar after Solalinde's early death.

Solalinde was married to the writer Jesua Alfau Galván de Solalinde (1890-1943).

A professorship at the University of Wisconsin is named after Solalinde.
