Manuel Muñoz Cortés

Manuel Muñoz Cortés (born July 25, 1915 in Badajoz , † August 28, 2000 in Murcia ) was a Spanish Romance scholar , linguist and Hispanist .

life and work

Muñoz Cortés studied in Salamanca and with Dámaso Alonso and Rafael Lapesa in Madrid (graduated in 1940). As early as 1936, at the invitation of Ramón Menéndez Pidal, he accepted a research grant at his institute. From 1941 to 1942 he was a lecturer in Spanish at the University of Münster and used his stay in Germany to visit important German Romanists. In 1946 he received his doctorate from the University of Madrid with the work El barroquismo de Quevedo. Aportaciones a su estudio en el juego de palabras and was professor in Murcia from 1950 to 1986 (from 1983 also dean), also from 1961 to 1963 visiting professor at the Sorbonne . From 1972 to 1982 he was head of the Spanish Cultural Institute ( Instituto español de cultura ) in Munich (today Instituto Cervantes ). He was one of the founding members of the European Association of Spanish Teachers ( Asociación Europea de Profesores de Español , AEPE, later merged into the Federación Internacional de Asociaciones de Profesores de Español , FIAPE) and was its general secretary for many years. Muñoz Cortés was a corresponding member of the Real Academia Española (1953) and the Real Academia de la Historia (1986) as well as a member of the Real Academia Alfonso X el Sabio in Murcia, founded in 1940 (1955). On June 15, 2015, the University of Murcia held a commemoration of his 100th birthday.
