Luis Velez de Guevara
Luis Vélez de Guevara (born August 1, 1579 in Ecija , Seville province , † November 10, 1644 in Madrid ) was a Spanish playwright and novelist during the Renaissance .
Life
Vélez studied at Osuna University , served as a page with the Archbishop of Seville and fought in Italy (1600–1605). Vélez became known for his humor and enjoyed the support of several noble patrons until he got a post at the court of King Philip IV of Spain . The eternally indebted Vélez married four times. With his 400 dramas, 80 of which have survived, Vélez secured a place among the greatest playwrights in Spain's “Golden Age” . Vélez was often inspired by Lope de Vega , but he also had his own literary qualities.

- “Reinar después de morir” deals with the legendary love and death of Inês de Castro .
- “La serrana de la Vera” is about a bandit who takes revenge on her seducer.
- His picaresque novel "El diablo cojuelo" (1641) served the French Alain-René Lesage in 1707 as a model for "Le Diable boiteux" .
