Agapito Rey

Agapito Rey (born March 24, 1892 in Pontevedra , † November 29, 1987 in Bloomington (Indiana) ) was an American Romanist and Hispanic scholar of Spanish origin.

life and work

Rey went to Argentina in 1912. In 1914 he got stuck in New York on his way back to Europe and settled in the United States. He graduated from high school there in 1917 and served in the American Army from 1918 to 1919. He then studied at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor (Master's degree in 1922). Until 1925 he taught as an instructor at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks , where he met the historian George Peter Hammond (1896-1993), with whom he was to realize numerous publications. In 1925 he went to Indiana University Bloomington , received his doctorate in 1929 from Antonio García Solalinde at the University of Wisconsin – Madison with the writing (ed.) Leomarte, Sumas de historia troyana (Madrid 1932) and rose to Associate Professor in Bloomington in 1944 to full professor for Spanish. In 1962 he retired (successor: Josep Roca-Pons ), but taught at the University of Arizona in Tucson until 1972 .

Rey was an honorary doctorate from the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque (1963) and a founding member of the North American Academy of the Spanish Language.
