Josep Roca-Pons

Josep Roca i Pons (born December 12, 1914 in Barcelona , † August 28, 2000 in Sant Pere de Ribes ) was a Spanish Romanist , Hispanic and Catalanist who worked in the United States.

life and work

Roca-Pons studied at the University of Barcelona , graduated in law in 1935, and Romance philology in 1941, and received his doctorate in 1953 with the dissertation Estudios sobre perífrasis verbales del español (Madrid 1958, Menéndez Pelayo Prize of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas ). In 1955 he went to the Universidad de Oriente in Santiago de Cuba and in 1958 to the Indiana University Bloomington . There he taught Spanish and Catalan until his retirement in 1981. Then he spent the rest of his life in Sitges . He was a co-founder and first president of the North American-Catalan Society in 1978 and of Catalan Review in 1986 . International journal of Catalan culture . Roca-Pons was a member of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (1988).
