Victor Oelschläger

Victor Oelschläger (born October 18, 1909 in Kitchener (Ontario) , † 1993 ) was an American Romanist , Hispanic and Medievalist .

life and work

Victor Rudolph Bernhardt Oelschläger was born in Kitchener (Ontario) , the center of Canadians of German origin. He went to school and studied in Beloit (Wisconsin) , also at the University of Wisconsin in Madison . There he received his doctorate in 1937 under Antonio García Solalinde with the thesis A preliminary Spanish word-list of first appearances up to Berceo (published ud T. A medieval Spanish word-list. A preliminary dated vocabulary of first appearances up to Berceo , Madison 1940, Ann Arbor 1981).

Oelschläger became Assistant Professor in Madison in 1942, made military service in the Navy from 1943 to 1946 and was then Associate Professor at Newcomb College, Tulane University in New Orleans until 1951 . After a brief stint at the University of Southern California , he was full professor at Florida State University in Tallahassee from 1953 to 1974 .

Oelschläger was President of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) in 1961. A professorship is named after him at Florida State University .
