Architecture and history

The building history of the church goes back to the second half of the 12th century. About three quarters of the nave date from this period. The church at that time consisted of thick walls made of field stones, was simply designed but relatively large. The church was probably built under the influence of the Lund diocese . In the 13th century there were several alterations and extensions, based on the design of Lund Cathedral . An originally existing choir was replaced by a new one made of brick. A small semicircular apse was added on the east side, but it was torn down again after a relatively short time. It gave way to an enlargement of the choir, the size of which was doubled. It got a straight end on its east side. Towards the end of the 13th century, the nave was extended by a quarter to the west. It is believed that the vaulted ceilings supported on three central pillars were also built during this period. A sacristy was added to the north wall of the choir . Before the northern and southern access to the nave emerged lobbies , of which only the South is preserved. A chapel, consecrated in 1510, was built on the south side at the expense of the city shoemaker's office. The church tower on the west side of the ship dates from the end of the Middle Ages .

In 1905 the church was extensively restored. The cathedral architect Theodor Wahlin was in charge of the work .

Furnishing

With regard to the furnishings, an altarpiece from 1636 should be emphasized. In the nave hangs a votive ship named Martin Luther, manufactured by Anders Gilberg in 1905 .

The simply designed Romanesque font of the church is made of green limestone and was built in the 12th century. A painted and carved wooden canopy from the 17th century hangs above the baptism .

Churchyard

The church is surrounded by a cemetery. On this, south of the church, is the unusual tombstone of Måns Mauritsson and Helene Sjöström and their daughters Carolina Elisabett and Chatorina Eleonora . Noteworthy is the old age of Helene Sjöström, who then lived from 1714 to 1847 and would therefore have died at the age of more than 130. At the birth of the daughters, she would have been 81 and 94 years old, respectively. Måns Mauritsson (1708–1809) came to a more modest 101 years of life according to the gravestone inscription.
