Claude Gauvard (born December 10, 1942 in Paris ) is a French medievalist , a key figure in the understanding of French history of the Middle Ages.

She taught and researched almost her entire professional life at the Sorbonne . After graduating from the Sorbonne in 1967, she initially worked as an assistant, then as a professor from 1992 until her retirement in 2009.

Influenced by Jacques Le Goff and Claude Lévi-Strauss , her research broke with the mainstream historical scholarship, which focused on political events, and shifted the focus to the rituals and emotions of the people involved. She used the archive of the Parliament of Paris, the highest French court of the Middle Ages, as a source for many of her investigations.
