Claude Haegi

Claude Haegi (* 1940 ) is a Swiss politician from the Liberal Party of Switzerland .

Haegi first moved in 1977 as a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Geneva . In 1983 he was elected a member of the city government of Geneva . There he was responsible for the finance department until 1989 and in 1987/1988 city president. In 1989, Haegi was elected a member of the State Council of the Canton of Geneva and was responsible for the Department of Home Affairs, Environmental and Regional Affairs. In 1993/1994 he was President of the Council of State. After the end of his term of office in 1997, he was again a member of the Cantonal Grand Council until 2001.

Haegi was also involved at European level: from 1983 to 1989 he was a member of the International Association of Mayors of French-speaking capitals and metropolises and from 1983 to 2001 initially a member and later president of the Swiss delegation to the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe . There he was first President of the Chamber of Regions from 1994 to 1996, then President of the General Congress until 1998. As a representative of the canton of Geneva, he was co-president of the Comité Régional Franco-Genevois together with the prefect of the Rhône-Alpes region during his tenure as a State Councilor . Haegi has also been President of the Denis de Rougemont Foundation for Europe since 1994 and President of the European Foundation for the Sustainable Development of the Regions since 2011 .

For his work, Haegi was awarded the Pro Merito Medal of the Council of Europe and made a Knight of the Legion of Honor .
