Claudia Waßner (* 1960 in Augsburg ) is a German organist , composer and arranger . She has been the cathedral organist at Augsburg Cathedral since 1996 and the first woman in this position in the centuries-long history of cathedral organists.

Life

Claudia Waßner's workplace since 1996:
the historic St. Mary's organ in Augsburg Cathedral , built by Franz Borgias Maerz in 1904

Claudia Waßner, who was born in Augsburg, began her musical training at the Leopold Mozart Conservatory there and then completed postgraduate studies at the Munich University of Music , where she trained as a concert organist until 1989. In the same year, at the age of 29, she became a full-time church musician at Augsburg Cathedral.

After the previous cathedral organist Reinhard Kammler (* 1954), who had held this position since 1978, succeeded Rudolf Brauckmann as cathedral music director in 1995 , Waßner was appointed the new cathedral organist in 1996 after a year of vacancy. Since records about the cathedral organists began in 1548, she has been the first woman in this office at Augsburg Cathedral.

Waßner sees it as one of her main tasks to preserve and disseminate the work of her predecessor in office, Karl Kraft . Among other things, she recorded a CD in 2012 with mostly unprinted and handwritten compositions by Kraft, which was reviewed in the music journal organ - Journal für die Orgel .

In addition to her professional activity as cathedral organist, Waßner works as a teacher for improvisation and liturgical organ playing as well as a concert organist. She also composes works for the organ herself and rearranges older pieces of music. At the Augsburger Domsingknaben she takes on the technical supervision for instrumental lessons. On the occasion of the anniversary year of Christoph von Schmid's 250th birthday, the boys' choir recorded a new arrangement of his well-known Christmas carol "Ihr Kinderlein kommet". The four-part choral setting is by Claudia Waßner.
