Claudio Baiocchi

Claudio Baiocchi (* 1940 ) is an Italian mathematician. He was a professor in Pavia and has been professor of higher analysis in Rome at La Sapienza University since the 1990s .

He dealt with partial differential equations and among other things with variation inequalities and interpolation between Banach spaces. In 1971 he applied this to a problem of free edges in the spread of liquids in porous media, with applications in foundation engineering (using the Baiocchi transformation). He also made contributions to the question of when “weak” and “strong” extensions of differential operators coincide.

Later he dealt with the Collatz problem , cellular automata and Turing machines .

In 1970 he received the Premio Caccioppoli . He is a member of the Accademia dei XL and the Accademia dei Lincei .
