The Clavelgut

The Clavelgut is a former country estate in Kleinhüningen .

It was built in the 18th century and changed hands five times before it was taken over by the independent silk ribbon dyer Alexander Clavel-Lindenmeier in 1860 . In 1868 he opened an aniline factory on what would later become the chemical industry site of the city of Basel . While the dye factory was sold to the Bindschelder & Busch company in 1873 and later became the chemical company Ciba , silk dyeing was passed on to his son Alexander Clavel-Merian. This was an important employer around the turn of the century. An extensive park was also built under him, where wild animals stayed and small hunts were held. There were two ponds in the complex, one of which became a swimming pool. The main street called "Hiltalingerstrasse", on which the Clavelgut sports field was located at the time, ran directly past the Clavelgut until it was relocated from 1936 to 1939 due to the construction of harbor basin II .

In 1943 the now defunct Schweizerische Reederei AG bought the house and used it for Rhine boatmen and above all for future Rhine boatmen. Today the property that houses the Schifferhaus restaurant belongs to the canton of Basel-Stadt . The Bürgin fisherman's house has stood next door since 2000 .
