Clavus

Clavus (Latin clavus "nail") called

  • the sole nails with hemispherical heads on the caligae (marching sandals of the Roman legionaries). For long marches they received a clavarium (pay supplement) to replace used clavi .
  • the purple stripe that ran from the top to the bottom of the tunic of Roman senators and knights and indicated their status. The clavus was wider with the senators than with the knights.
  • the corn
  • part of the hemielytres (half-coverts) of the bedbugs
  • Clavus (genus) , a genus of snails in the family Drilliidae
