Cleistocactus leonensis is a species of plant in the genus Cleistocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet leonensis means 'from the location Nuevo-Leon (Mexico)'.

Cleistocactus leonensis grows prostrate to semi-upright with dark green shoots branching at the base and reaches a length of 0.5 to 1.5 meters with a diameter of 5 to 6 centimeters. There are 9 to 11 low, rounded ribs , which are divided into approximately hexagonal cusps by deep, wavy furrows . The 8 to 12 awl, straight, piercing thorns are initially black and yellowish or reddish at their base, later they become white-gray with a darker tip. They are 0.5 to 2.5 inches long. The central spine, which can also be missing, is only slightly longer than the remaining spines.
The more or less upright, narrowly funnel-shaped, crooked flowers are red to slightly purple and appear near the shoot tips. They are 5.5 to 7 centimeters long and have a diameter of 3 centimeters. Your pericarpel and the tube of flowers are covered with fine, white hair. The spherical, yellowish green fruits have a diameter of 2 to 3 centimeters and are only sparsely hairy.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Cleistocactus leonensis is distributed in the Ecuadorian provinces of Azuay and Loja at altitudes of 1800 to 2000 meters. It was first described in 1989 by Jens E. Madsen .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
