Clemens Sels

Clemens Sels (born May 31, 1822 in Neuss ; † December 25, 1893 there ) was a German pharmacist , manufacturer , art collector and donor .

Sels was born as the son of the pharmacist Ludwig Sels and his wife Maria Agnes, b. Degreef, born in Neuss. Like his father, he first worked as a pharmacist. After his marriage to Marie Louise Jacobine Pauline Sels , b. Hofstadt, he founded a stearin candle factory with his brother . From 1871 to 1873, now a PhD producer was First Deputy Mayor of the city of Neuss. Together with his wife, he founded a fund in 1875 for the benefit of hardworking, innocent, but destitute citizens. In 1877 the art collector Clemens Sels became a member of the “Association for Classical Antiquity and History”. He eventually became a museum attendant and was appointed chairman in 1888, which Karl Tücking took over after his death .

He died on December 25, 1893 and was buried in the family vault in the main cemetery in Neuss.

In his will, his wife donated the Museum of Local History and Art in Neuss, which was established in 1912 and was named the Clemens Sels Museum in 1950 .
