Cleopus solani is a beetle from the family of the weevils (Curculionidae). The genus Cleopus is represented by another species in Europe: Cleopus pulchellus .
features
The beetles are 2.8-3 mm long. They are oval-shaped with a medium-strength trunk. The front edge of the front chest ( prothorax ) is barely sanded. The bristles in Cleopus solani are clearly protruding and longer than in the related species Cleopus pulchellus . The bristle hairs are about as long as the diameter of the eyes. The sides of the pronotum are rounded and noticeably narrowed towards the back. The wing coverts have a characteristic pattern of light and dark grid spots. There is a larger dark area on the pronotum and on the back half of the wing cover. The antenna base is in the front third of the trunk. The anterior femora have a tooth.
distribution
The occurrence of Cleopus solani extends over large parts of Europe. However, the species is absent from the Iberian Peninsula , the British Isles , Scandinavia (including Denmark), and Russia.
Way of life
The beetles overwinter under the basal leaves of mullein ( Verbascum ). They are seen between March and September. The species prefers dry habitats and is absent in the higher mountains. The host plants of Cleopus solani form different Verbascum species, possibly the Figwort ( Scrophularia nodosa ).
