Cleveland Tractor Company , Cletrac for short , was an American tractor manufacturer from Cleveland , Ohio . Cletrac is the inventor of the steering gear of the same name for tracked vehicles , which works with a double differential and was widely used.
history
The company was founded in 1916 by the brothers Rollin H. White and Clarence G. White as the Cleveland Motor Plow Company . They started building tractors. In 1918 the company got its final name. The tracked vehicles had an excellent reputation and sold well until the company was sold in the 1940s.
Kerosene was usually used as fuel, with a special starting device that worked with gasoline. The first diesel tractor was presented by Cletrac in 1933.
At the end of 1944, Cletrac was taken over by the Oliver Corporation . The tractors were further developed, but the technical fundamentals were not changed. In 1960, the White Motor Company , ultimately the same family that included the founders of the Cleveland Tractor Company, bought Oliver. The plant was closed in 1965. The remaining White Tractor Division was sold to AGCO in 1995 .

Trivia
- Cletrac vehicles were the first to be used successfully in Antarctica on Richard Evelyn Byrd's second expedition between 1933 and 1935. Therefore, the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee gave a mountain in the British Antarctic Territory the name Cletrac Peak .
