Climate Service Center Germany

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS) has the task of developing prototypical products and services to support decision-makers from politics, business and society in adapting to climate change. GERICS is based in Hamburg and is headed by meteorologist and climate researcher Daniela Jacob .

history

GERICS was set up in 2009 by the Federal Government as part of the high-tech strategy for climate protection of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research at the Helmholtz Center Geesthacht - Center for Material and Coastal Research GmbH . It was financed by the BMBF until 2014. GERICS has been an independent scientific organizational unit of the HZG since June 2014. It is based in Hamburg's Chilehaus and employs an interdisciplinary team of natural scientists, economists, humanities scholars and architects with around 48 employees. In addition, GERICS is part of the German Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety .

Departments

GERICS is interdisciplinary and comprises the departments “Climate System”, “Management of Natural Resources”, “Economy and Politics” and “Communication”.

Climate system

The “Climate System” department provides data and information on possible developments in the climate. Events such as rain, heat or cold are modeled for a selected region in climate models. This means that future developments are forecast on the basis of climatic developments over the past decades. In addition to the changes in previous years, influences that are expected to result in further changes, such as increased emissions of greenhouse gases or climate protection measures, are also taken into account. Representatives from industry and administration receive information for decision-making processes based on these climate models.

Management of natural resources

The "Management of Natural Resources" department advises representatives from agriculture, forestry and water management, the health sector and urban and regional planning on concepts for adapting to climate change, which also take into account issues of climate protection and nature conservation. Among other things, it is about preserving biodiversity, ensuring sustainable land use, countering flood events or counteracting the spread of diseases.

Economy and Politics

The “Economics and Politics” department deals with the costs of climate change and climate protection. The department pools knowledge about climate policy and the economic costs of climate change and uses this as a basis to develop protective and adaptation measures. Decision-makers from politics and business are advised on the economic and political consequences of climate change and climate protection.

communication

The “Communication” department provides information on climate change and its consequences. The aim is to prepare and communicate science-based information in a way that is appropriate for the target group. The target groups include journalists, interested laypeople, teachers, students and pupils, as well as scientists and decision-makers from politics, business and administration. The department thus acts as an intermediary between science and the public.
