biography
Clive Antony Lewis was born on September 11, 1971 in London. He grew up on an estate in Northampton as the son of a single father. He was the first member of his family to attend university and study economics at the University of Bradford before being elected President of the Students Union and later Vice President of the National Union of Students (NUS).
Lewis was expelled from the role of Vice President of the NIS in 1996 by the President of the NIS, Jim Murphy, for publicly expressing concerns about tuition fees. Murphy's actions were widely criticized in public, especially by Ken Livingstone , then Labor MP and later Mayor of London .
Lewis ran for President of the National Union of Students in 1996. However, he was defeated by Douglas coach.
Political career
Lewis was elected as a future Labor Party candidate for Norwich South in November 2011 and prevailed against all other candidates, including musician Dave Rowntree . In the general election in 2015 , Lewis won the constituency with a clear majority. He replaced the previous MP Simon Wright from the Liberal Democrats . In the general election in 2017 and general election in 2019 defended Lewis his mandate.
Lewis was one of 36 Labor MPs who nominated Jeremy Corbyn as a candidate for election to Labor Party leader in 2015. In September 2015 he was appointed shadow minister in the energy and climate change team at the Labor Front Bank.
After the resignation of Corbyn's shadow cabinet following the EU membership referendum in the UK in 2016 , Lewis was appointed shadow defense minister. In September 2016, as Lewis was preparing to give his first speech as shadow defense secretary, Corbyn changed part of his strategy in which he announced that he did not want to change Labor's current policy on nuclear weapons. Lewis was informed of the change through a sticky note . A month later, Corbyn removed Lewis from the post of Shadow Secretary of Defense and replaced him with Nia Griffith. Lewis was then appointed shadow trade secretary. The move was viewed as a tactical downgrade.
On February 8, Lewis resigned in protest of the Labor Party's decision to force his MPs to activate Article 50 and thus initiate the Brexit process. He was among the 47 Labor MPs who voted against Article 50 .
In April 2017, he voted against the early elections in 2017 . Besides him, only 12 other MPs also voted against.
In December 2019, Lewis announced that he would be running to chair the Labor Party 2020.
Political positions
Lewis is assigned to the left wing of the Labor Party . He sharply criticized New Labor's course and declared it “dead and buried” in his victory speech after the general election in 2015 . At the same time he promised to oppose an "onslaught of cuts" by the ruling Conservative Party . He distanced himself from the Labor Party's restrictive policy on immigration.
Unlike Jeremy Corbyn , Lewis made a clear commitment to the UK's EU membership from the start. He was one of the first MPs to speak out in favor of a second referendum. He is committed to an ambitious climate policy and worked among others with the Green MP Caroline Lucas on a Green New Deal .
