Club Atlético River Plate Puerto Rico is a Puerto Rican soccer team from Fajardo, Puerto Rico . The club, founded in 2007, has played in the International Division of the USL Professional Division , the third division in the football league system in the USA , since 2011 . The team also plays in the Puerto Rico Soccer League , of which they are the reigning champions.

The home games are played at the Roberto Clemente Stadium in Carolina, Puerto Rico .

history

On June 27, 2004, 31 supporters of the Argentine football club River Plate signed a cooperation agreement with the club. This was initiated and directed by Steven Alvarez, who wanted to create a new team in Puerto Rico. After various meetings, an indoor soccer team was set up in cooperation with the neighboring club Academia Quintana . This team finished fourth in their first tournament.

In August 2004 the Club Atlético River Plate Corp. officially entered in the commercial register in Puerto Rico and the first office was established in Carolina . Between 2005 and 2006, people in charge of River Plate and the Federación Puertorriqueña de Futbol, ​​the Puerto Rico football association, met to explain the possibility of a franchise on the island. Afterwards, the president of the association signed a license agreement, so River Plate Puerto Rico was founded on January 1st, 2007.

In order to increase the awareness of the new club, an agreement was reached with boxer Miguel Cotto . From then on, he wore the colors of the new franchise in all fights. Before the founding, the entry into the Liga Premier de Fútbol from 2007 was announced. River Plate Puerto Rico took first place here.

In the franchise environment, rumors about a possible entry into the USL First Division surfaced again and again . The club management decided against it and became a founding member of the Puerto Rico Soccer League, which began operating in 2008.

PRSL

On June 28, 2008, the team completed their first game in the Puerto Rico Soccer League. A 2-0 victory was achieved against Atlético de San Juan FC . The team made it to second place in the regular season and was able to qualify for the play-offs. In the final, however, they lost 2-1 to Sevilla FC Puerto Rico .

In 2009 River Plate won the regular season, but had to admit defeat in the semi-finals against Atletico de San Juan FC.

The team celebrated their greatest success so far in the 2010 season. In the final, they met the big favorites Puerto Rico Islanders FC . After two wins, the 2-0 win and the Supercopa DirecTV was made perfect. This qualified the team for the 2011 CFU Club Championship .

USL Professional Division

River Plate Puerto Rico has also played in the USL Professional Division since the 2011 season. The team there is part of the International Division.

Stadion

In the first three seasons, the games were played at the Estadio Francisco Montaner in Ponce, Puerto Rico . In 2011 the team was supposed to move to the Estadio Sixto Escobar, which is located in San Juan, Puerto Rico . Due to an invalid contract, River Plate moved to Fajardo . Since the city does not yet have a sufficient stadium, the home games are played in neighboring Carolina .
