Clyomys is a genus of rodents in the family of spiny rats (Echimyidae) with two species that are found in South America .

features

The species reach a head-trunk length of 105 to 230 mm and a tail length of 55 to 87 mm. They weigh about 200 g. Their fur is gray-brown to black-brown on top, while the belly is pale pink to white. The strong grave claws on the hands are characteristic, in contrast to normal claws on other barbed rats. The bulla on the skull is also noticeably large.

Types and distribution

Mammal Species of the World (2005) and the World Conservation Union (IUCN) differentiate between the following species:

The IUCN lists Clyomys laticeps as " Least Concern " and Clyomys bishopi with "insufficient data" ( Data Deficient ).

Way of life

These rodents live in the Cerrado savannah and in the Pantanal wetland . They dig specially shaped burrows. These consist of a spiral tunnel that ends in a chamber about 85 cm below the surface. The living area has a diameter of about 25 cm and is upholstered with parts of plants. Sometimes there is a smaller chamber halfway up. The animals form colonies and are diurnal , at least in Clyomys laticeps . One young is born per litter.
