features

The red-headed easel tail, up to 15 cm long and weighing up to 14 g, has a large head and a long, mostly stilted tail. The plumage is reddish-brown on the back and wings, golden or yellow-brown on the throat and chest and orange on the head.

Occurrence

The red-headed easel tail lives in the damp mountain rainforests of New Guinea at an altitude of 2000 to 3000 m.

behavior

The red-headed easel tail lives in groups of up to ten animals and makes a lot of noise when foraging because they communicate with each other almost non-stop. The diet consists of small insects, spiders and other invertebrates that are picked from leaves or the ground.

Reproduction

An oval or round nest of leaves and grass is built in a bush or in low vegetation. The female incubates two to four eggs alone or together with the male. Non-breeding members of the group help raise the young birds.
